Stepped House

The stepped house was a challenging assignment as the plot was quite small to accommodate all the spaces required for a joint family comprising of 10 members. The concept of the stepped house was evolved to accommodate all the spaces without compromising the quality and size of it and yet abiding by the bye-laws. In such scenario, it's very crucial to maintain the bungalow feel and offering bungalow qualities and not become an apartment.

The architecture of the bungalow is very contemporary and done in such a way it looks like a tall bungalow but not an apartment. The design of the bungalow is such that the walls are cladded with "tandoor" stone and white boxes seem to be resting on these walls. The double height volume of the living room is emphasized from outside too by creating a wooden wall designed with mythological carvings symbolic of the culture.

The theme of the interior is very modern yet homely. Living, family, dining, and kitchen flow into each other and also in the landscape. The compound walls are treated as part of the landscape which allows spaces to be visually larger.

The living room with its double height offers a grand feel which has been accentuated with a contemporary chandelier. Courtyard, the staircase, and the outdoor deck almost merge with the living becoming an inherent part of the space.

The family cum TV room just adjacent to the living, yet at a higher level allows for flexibility of usage. These spaces can be used separately and also together in case of large gatherings.

Though the Dining room is not a physically big space, it visually extends out till the compound wall which is covered with a vertical garden. Pooja Room actually cantilevers out over the water body. The serenity of natural light and water body next to it brings in the real spiritual ambiance.

Each bedroom is designed different theme using different colours and textures and is enhanced by the use of canvas paintings and artworks, The top terrace is designed like a gazebo with a steel pergola on top and wooden flooring. The pergola shades the terrace and creates a perfect evening space for the family.

Overall this bungalow satisfies all the needs of the clients and does not appear to be cramped in any way. The elegance in interior décor has not overpowered the spaces rather helped to create a lavish and grand look for each space.
